This week, we have a new #1. This cover of Steve Winwood's 1986 classic "Higher Love", originally recorded by the late Whitney Houston in 1990 for a rare Japanese release of her "I'm Your Baby Tonight" album, and newly remixed by Norwegian EDM DJ Kygo, the first chart-topper for both artists. In Whitney's case, it caps off over 20 years of waiting for her first #1 since "When You Believe" peaked at #7 on my first chart back in 1999. This makes her the second artist, following the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, to top my chart posthumously; she did this earlier in the year with two #1's from their final album "In The End".
Don't call them angels: new Charlie's Angels theme enters in the top 5
When a collaboration between three of the biggest female artists around, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey, was announced as the lead single from the new "Charlie's Angels" soundtrack, I was intrigued. Sure enough, it didn't disappoint, and "Don't Call Me Angel" is this week's highest new entry all the way up at #5. It is already Lana's highest chart placing though several singles from the "Born To Die" and related eras made my top 30, Miley's third top 5 and Ariana's 10th top 5.
Louis gives One Direction members at least one top 10 hit each
After narrowly missing the top 10 with "Miss You" and "Two Of Us", Louis Tomlinson leaps 22-6 with his latest, the Oasis-esque "Kill My Mind". This puts him in the same company as his One Direction bandmates, as now all five have reached my top 10 at least once. Only Harry and Niall have multiple top 10 hits so far, with three each, and in each case one #1. Will Louis become the third One Direction member to reach #1?
It's never too late: O-Town and Springsteen end lengthy top 10 droughts
The last time O-Town was in the top 10 was August 26, 2001 with "All Or Nothing", and the last time Bruce Springsteen was top 10 was October 6, 2002 with "The Rising". This week, after 18 and 17 years respectively, both dramatically different artists have finally returned to the top 10, with "Off" and "I'll Stand By You" respectively.
Movers and shakers: 21-40 edition
Steve Aoki's collaboration with the Backstreet Boys, "Let It Be Me", rises 36-22, the first Post Malone song I've liked enough to chart, "Circles", rises 35-24, BBMak's follow-up to their former #1 "Bullet Train", "So Far Away", is right above it moving 31-27, and Incubus's return, the indie anthem "Into The summer", rises 46-31.
Nostalgia always wins: Through the decades (The 90's Edition)
Hootie & the Blowfish return for the first time in thirteen years as "Rollin'" rolls onto the chart at #32. It's their comeback single following a successful country music career for lead singer Darius Rucker. Texas trio Fastball enters at #50 with "The Girl You Pretended To Be", their first appearance since 2017's top 10 hit "I Will Never Let You Down", and Mandy Moore makes a comeback after mostly doing acting with "When I Wasn't Watching" at #53. Also debuting are Usher, lending vocals to the DJ Black Coffee, and Third Eye Blind.
Nostalgia always wins: Through the decades (The 80's Edition)
Who else is back? Well, the chart has been Rickrolled as Rick Astley lands at #63 with "Every One Of Us". New songs by Simply Red and the Pet Shop Boys, joined by Years & Years, also debut.
Nostalgia always wins: Through the decades (The 60's-70's Edition)
We've gone back this far... why not go back even further? Proving a great song has no age limit, icons of classic rock Ringo Starr (age 79) and The Who (Roger Daltrey is 75) both debut with the lead singles from their forthcoming albums. As a further connection, Ringo's son, Zak Starkey, has been the touring drummer for The Who since 1996!
Okay, so there are some younger artists in there too...
Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt's latest, "Black & Blue", lands at #55 and hopes to carry on her recent hit streak which has included two top 10's. Meghan Trainor takes her "Genetics" to #90, up and coming Canadian singer Ryland James debuts at #91 and, surprisingly, Halsey enters at #92 with "Graveyard"! This is her first appearance in over two years, as I have hated much of her stuff in this time.
R.I.P. Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek
The classic rock world was recently saddened by the loss of two of its greatest names. Last Friday, Eddie Money passed away at age 70, followed by The Cars' lead singer Ric Ocasek on Sunday at age 75. While both artists had their prime in the 70's and 80's, before my chart's era, both did see some success in my chart's era. Ric Ocasek did lead vocals on The Cars' reunion single "Sad Song", which made my top 20 in 2011, while Eddie Money hit #17 earlier this year with his first new single in over a decade, "Brand New Day". Additionally, Tim McGraw is currently charting with a cover of The Cars' biggest hit, "Drive". I will always remember the contributions both of these fine men did to music, and may they rock on in rock and roll heaven.
