Cantrell "Atone"s For Second Week at #1
Jerry Cantrell spends a second week at #1 with "Atone". The lead single from the Alice In Chains guitarist/singer's forthcoming third solo album "Brighten" was met with heavy anticipation and draws back to his 90's classics. He keeps JessieLou out of the top spot as her protest song "Let's Pretend There's No Pandemic" holds at #2 for her second week; this is her second top 3 hit this year, following "Identity Crisis".
Familiar Faces Return To Top 10
This week, four new songs enter the top 10. The highest of them is the re-teaming of a "Smooth" pairing of Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas, accompanied by American Authors, on the song "Move". The lead single from Santana's "Blessings and Miracles" album is the Mexican-American guitarist and his band's first top 10 hit in 7 years, and surpasses the #6 peak of their previous collaboration "Smooth" from 1999.
At #5 is the collaboration from British pop icons Elton John and Dua Lipa, on the track remixed by Pnau, "Cold Heart". The song, which borrows lines from Elton's classics including "Sacrifice" and "Rocket Man", has become his first major mainstream hit in two decades and follows up a streak of collaborations that have given the 74-year-old legend a late-career resurgence for me, which has included four #1 hits since 2019. Will this become his fifth, and Dua's third?
#8 is The Weeknd with "Take My Breath". Following up the huge worldwide success of his #1 hit from 2010, "Blinding Lights", he's doubled down on the disco influence for a familiar yet refreshing sound for 2021. The retro sound clearly has worked for fellow top 10er Bruno Mars, who rises 10-7 with his latest collaboration with Anderson .Paak, as Silk Sonic, with "Skate".
And at #10 is Michelle Branch. Commemorating the 20-year anniversary of her classic album "The Spirit Room", she has re-recorded its tracks; the first of which, "You Get Me", rises 23-10 and becomes her first top 10 hit in four years. The original album release had three top 10 hits, including two #1's.
More Chart-topping Artists Enter The Top 40
Two new songs make the top 40, both by former #1 artists; Daughtry continues their hit streak with "Lioness" at #30 and Canadian dance-pop singer Kiesza enters at #36 with "When The Stars Don't Shine".
Billy Idol, Metallica Chart Alongside Remakes
Two artists on the chart are charting alongside remakes of their classic hits. Billy Idol's latest, "Bitter Taste", rises 58-54, while a remake of his 1984 hit "Eyes Without A Face", as performed by Angel Olsen, debuts at #68. And while Weezer's remake of Metallica's 1991 classic "Enter Sandman" rises 81-76, right below it at #77 we see Metallica themselves charting with their live rendition of Soundgarden's "All Your Lies", originally recorded for "I Am The Highway: A Tribute To Chris Cornell", which has been released on vinyl this week.
R.I.P. Charlie Watts (1941-2021)
Sadly, this week, we say goodbye to the legendary drummer from the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts, who died at the age of 80. His career was very impressive, being part of the Stones since the beginning and contributing rhythm to all their great classics over the years. The Rolling Stones, with Charlie's contributions, have charted several times over the years, including chart era hits such as "Streets Of Love", "Doom And Gloom" and just last year, the top 10 hit "Living In A Ghost Town". They dip into the archives for a 40th anniversary re-release of their classic album "Tattoo You" and pull out several previously unreleased tracks, including the song that debuts at #69 this week, "Living In The Heart Of Love".
Flashback to 1999
Since Santana and Rob Thomas have reunited, how about flash back to their first iconic and legendary collaboration? It was rising up the chart at this time in 1999 as Christina Aguilera claimed her first #1 with the classic "Genie In A Bottle".
